The White Rabbit Was Late .. You’re Not

There is something wonderfully familiar about the White Rabbit rushing through Alice in Wonderland, checking his watch and declaring: “I’m late! I’m late! For a very important date!”

He is permanently in a hurry and disappearing off down some rabbit hole.

Always convinced he should already be somewhere else.

And perhaps that is why the White Rabbit has become such an enduring character .. because most of us recognise that feeling in one form or another.

Not necessarily because we actually are late.

Sometimes it is simply because we have looked around and noticed that somebody else appears to have arrived before us.

And suddenly we are checking an imaginary watch of our own.

But What Exactly Are We Supposed To Be Late For?

This is where the timing question starts to change.

There are certain points in life when you suddenly become much more aware of what others are doing. Someone has started a business; someone else has created a digital product or discovered passive income, while others are experimenting with AI or launching an idea they’ve been thinking about.

And because we live in a world where we can see all of this happening in real time, it can occasionally create the impression that there was some sort of official starting gun .. and perhaps we missed it.

Except there wasn’t - there never has been.

There is no universal timetable for discovering a new possibility.

There is no secret date by which you were supposed to have created your first digital product.

And there certainly isn’t a White Rabbit standing at the entrance to the internet tapping his pocket watch as if you are late.

Although Sir Phil o’Sophy would probably enjoy a conversation with him if there were.

Look At What You’re Arriving With

When you discover something new at 45, 50, 55, 60 or beyond, you are arriving at the starting point with decades of life attached to you.

You know the things, the work you have done; things you have learned; problems you have solved; businesses you may have run; jobs you may have loved or hated; jobs that taught you useful things in completely unexpected ways plus those hobbies, interests, curiosities and skills that have accumulated quietly in the background.

You may even have knowledge that has become so normal to you that you barely notice it anymore.

And that makes this particular starting point a very different advantage .. because you are beginning with all that experience already behind you.

Experience Changes The Starting Line

Imagine two people deciding today that they would like to create a digital product.

One may be starting with an idea and discovering the skills and knowledge that will help her create it.

The other may be starting with thirty years of knowledge about a subject, a collection of skills gathered from several careers, an understanding of what people regularly ask her about and a very good sense of what she enjoys doing.

They are both beginning something new.

But they are bringing different things to that starting point.

That is why I think the idea of being “late” deserves another look.

Sometimes arriving later simply means you have had longer to collect things worth bringing with you.

And those things can become incredibly useful when you begin looking at what you already know through the lens of possibility.

Down The Rabbit Hole We Go...

Of course, once you start thinking this way, one question tends to lead to another.

What exactly do I know?

Which parts of my experience might be useful to someone else?

Could one of those things become a digital product?

Could it eventually create some passive income?

And suddenly you are diving down a rabbit hole.

At the Happy Hustle Co, I see rabbit holes as simply another scenic route to another destination.

You follow one curiosity, which introduces you to another thought, which leads to another question, and somewhere along the way you discover a possibility you hadn’t been looking for when you started.

That is probably why the White Rabbit feels quite at home around here.

The Queen Was also In The Same Story, After All

And then there is another character from Alice in Wonderland who deserves a mention.

Yes, The Queen - you know The Red Queen.

Now, I’m not suggesting we adopt her particular management style.

“Off with their heads!” is unlikely to become an official Happy Hustle Co business strategy any time soon.

But I do like the fact that our frantic White Rabbit and a Queen inhabit the very same world.

Somewhere along the way, many of us reach a point where deciding what we actually want to do next starts to matter more than following everybody else’s footpath.

That is much closer to what I think of as the Queenage Era. It’s not an age or number printed on a birthday card.

More a way of looking at where you are now and recognising that all those years behind you have given you quite a unique collection of things to work with.

Your Timing Might Actually Be Really Good

Perhaps timing isn’t only about whether you started earlier. Maybe it is also about what is available to you now.

Twenty years ago, you may have had the same idea, the same interest or the same knowledge sitting quietly in the background, but the route from I know this to I could create something from this was far less straightforward.

You might have needed technical skills, a designer, a web developer, printing, stock, storage, postage, or a much bigger budget just to test whether the idea had legs.

Now the online landscape is very different and is changing all the time.

Digital products are easier to create than they once were. Technology has become more accessible. AI can support tasks that previously required skills you might never have considered learning. Platforms exist that allow one person to create, sell and deliver a product from a laptop.

And perhaps most importantly, people now actively go online looking for answers, ideas, shortcuts, instructions, inspiration and practical knowledge every single day.

Maybe the thing you know now has a route to a market that simply didn’t exist in the same way before.

And perhaps the experience you have gained over the years is arriving at exactly the same moment as the tools that make it easier to package, present and share it.

So perhaps the question isn’t: “Am I too late?”

Perhaps it is: “What do I have now that I wouldn’t have had twenty years ago?”

And the answer may be a great deal more than you first think.

You may have experience. Expertise. Perspective. Stories. Skills. Better judgement.

A clearer idea of what interests you and what doesn’t. You may know which ideas are worth following and which ones can happily wander off down somebody else’s path.

You may also have more confidence in what you know because you have lived it, tested it, refined it and used it out there in the big wide world.

That matters because being earlier is not always the same as being better timed.

Sometimes the right moment is the one where your knowledge, your experience and the available opportunity finally meet in the same place.

And if that is where you happen to be now, then perhaps you are not late at all.

Perhaps your timing is actually spot on.

The White Rabbit Can Keep His Pocket Watch

You absolutely don’t need one or all those alarms, because there is no important date you have missed.

There is simply the point at which an idea gets your attention and you decide it might be worth seeing where it might lead.

Perhaps that idea is creating your first digital product; or it is discovering whether something you already know could become a little extra passive income; or it is simply allowing yourself to look at your experience with fresh eyes and wondering what possibilities might be hiding there.

And if that sends you down another rabbit hole... Well, you are already in very good company.

The White Rabbit may have been late - or his pocket watch might have been slow.

Either way, you’re arriving exactly when you have something worth bringing with you.

Which means you are exactly in the right place.. right now!
